Traffic Updates: Freeway and Bridge Closures in Portland Metro Area (2026)

Traffic Alert: A Weekend of Disruptions on Portland's Roads

The coming weekend promises to be a challenging one for drivers in the Portland metro area, with a series of road closures and bridge work set to cause significant delays. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and local authorities are urging commuters to plan ahead and consider alternative routes.

One of the major disruptions will occur on I-205 northbound at the Abernethy Bridge, where concrete work necessitates a full closure from 11 p.m. on Friday through Saturday morning. This will impact northbound travel between Highway 99E and Highway 43, but southbound lanes will remain open. Drivers are advised to use I-5 and I-84 as detours, and the Arch Bridge provides an alternative for local traffic to cross the Willamette River.

The Rose Quarter in Portland will also see disruptions, with both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 closed overnight from 10 p.m. on Saturday to noon on Sunday. Southbound closures start at Exit 302B, or at the Fremont Bridge, while northbound closures begin at Exit 300, leading to I-84 eastbound. I-84 westbound drivers will be redirected to I-5 southbound. These closures are necessary for the installation of a new overhead sign structure at the Oregon Convention Center.

The Morrison Bridge will be closed to drivers from 9 p.m. on Friday to 8 p.m. on Saturday for strengthening work, with another brief closure expected on Monday, July 13, from 9 p.m. to midnight for equipment removal. Cyclists and pedestrians will still have access to the bridge during these periods.

As if that weren't enough, the Seattle To Portland Bicycle Classic will bring thousands of cyclists to the roads this weekend, causing minimal delays but requiring drivers to be vigilant and watch out for riders. The event adds to the already congested roads, making for a potentially chaotic weekend for commuters.

The ODOT's work doesn't end there, as they will continue into next week with several overnight closures of the Interstate Bridge. From Monday, July 13, to Tuesday, July 14, the southbound I-5 and SR 14 exit to southbound I-5 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. On Wednesday, July 15, and Thursday, July 16, the northbound I-5 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. These closures are necessary for inspections and maintenance work, including raising the lifts, which will be conducted by barge from the Columbia River.

In summary, the Portland area is in for a challenging weekend, with multiple road closures and bridge work causing significant disruptions. Commuters are advised to plan their routes carefully, consider public transportation, and be prepared for delays. The upcoming week also promises further disruptions, highlighting the need for ongoing infrastructure maintenance in the region.
